Edges of Ailey
Exhibition Branding, Editorial Design 2025
Edges of Ailey is a rebranding project of the Whitney Museum exhibition, exploring Alvin Ailey’s legacy through the lens of movement. Inspired by his fusion of Horton and Graham techniques, I reflected curvilinear and linear motions in the identity system and used expanding graphic elements to express how his spirit radiates beyond the stage.
Exhibition Logo
The two logos symbolically represent Ailey’s choreography, which blends the Martha Graham and Lester Horton techniques into his own distinctive style. Each technique is visually expressed through curves and straight lines. The gradual shift in typeface weight reflects the dynamics of strength and softness in Ailey’s movement.
Exhibition Catalogue
The exhibition catalog is wrapped in a book jacket, with debossed typography on the cover underneath. It is composed of sections introducing the exhibition, an essay on Alvin Ailey, descriptions of the featured works, and information about the participating artists. Each section’s layout was designed to evoke a sense of movement throughout.
